I got this daylily during a neighborly flower swap back around 2004 and have always wondered if it could be Sammy Russell. I realize that with over 80,000 daylilies the chances are slim, but I gotta try! I've looked at the NGA database, but got more confused because of the variation in the pictures.

The AHS database does not list a bloom size for Sammy Russell, so I put a bloom of Corryton Pink in the azalea bush behind my NOID daylily. Corryton Pink is registered as having 6.5 inch blooms, so my NOID is a small bloom, but I do believe it is around 28 inches tall. It gets mostly shade, so may do better if in more sun.

I don't have Sammy Russell any more, but that looks similar and I think the size is about right. I don't think mine was quite so dark around the eye. Mine was not a large flower, maybe a little larger than 4". Sammy is supposed to be a late, but mine was more mid to mid late.

Thanks Nancy and Valerie!

I am glad to know that Sammy Russell is not a large bloom. I wonder if that was just an omission in the AHS database on the bloom size. Of course, it is an oldie, but it would seem like that could be added.
