It was wonderful being in the garden rather early this morning before the sun took over and the heat became too intense to be outside for long. I was out with the camera, and first up was the one clump of tuberoses we have that does so well. I could smell them even several feet away.

From there I proceeded south where our antique rose Blush Noisette was perfuming the air. The flowers are small and bloom in clusters, but our plant is large and there are lots of flowers.

On to the "swimming pool garden" where there is a large Ellen's Blue butterfly bush. I can't describe the fragrance of this plant, it is so different to my nose.

On the other side of the SPG is the "Elizabeth" ginger, it has grown quite tall this year. To me, the fragrance is similar to the old Hall's honeysuckle.

The last stop is east of our house where there is a lovely Crinum Gowenii, and it indicates to me that fall is on the way. In a rainy year, there will be many more bloom stalks, but this year we will have to settle for just a few, and so happy to have them.

I forgot the arch in the SPG with the moonflowers, but most had closed when I was taking pictures yesterday morning. Here is the way it looks when the blooms begin to open in the evening:

This morning I was in one of our gardens pulling dead scapes from daylilies when I realized that the sweet fragrance I was smelling was from the three Rose Creek abelias we planted on one side. For some reason, I overlook those small shrubs when I am out there. We used to plant daylilies and other perennials there, but they always failed to grow. So, we put in the abelias and they were happy from Day One. This area is shaded all morning; sun arrives about noon or a little later, and they do just fine.

Avedon I can just imagine the lovely fragrance just from looking at your beautiful pics.

I might add nicotiana just one or two plant can keep your olfactory senses attention 20 feet away. Or honeysuckle and my absolute favorites star jasmine and stargazer pink lily! Bring a lily in the house wonderful ?

How do you grow tuberroses before the gophers get them? I even planted mine in a protective metal basket. I think your garden is beautiful!

@Bumplbea, thank you, glad you like the pictures. As far as gophers, they don't come up into that particular garden where the tuberoses are, thank goodness, hope they never do. They usually stay in another area where they happily destroy as many daylilies as they can. We hate it, of course, but we won't put down poison, that's way too dangerous.

When we lived in a different part of Texas, we grew the big "tobacco" nicotiana, and yes, lovely fragrance. Here in northeast TX we have a "Fragrant Cloud" honeysuckle and Lonicera periclymenum var .Serotina. I keep thinking there is a "florida " in there someplace but someone can correct me on this. Also, we grow two large bushes of Lonicera fragrantissima, the winter honeysuckle and in February, it is wonderful when it hits peak bloom.

I can only guess if you have gophers, you have sandy type soil like we do, are you on the east side of the state? My husband and I have been fortunate enough to have been in Oregon a couple of times, on vacation, but we never got to stay very long--too bad, we loved it.

Avedon. I enjoyed all your beaytiful pics very much and I hope you continue to post . Your so lucky the gophers don't sneak in and gobble the tuborousroses. They are so beautiful and extremely fragrant.

Just wanted to add a couple you have seen before but it's so nice to have these blooms in October.

I'm throwing in something different here:


Georgia Savory---a small sub-shrub with very fragrant foliage, it's very minty when you brush or rub against the leaves. The pollinators love this one. I wasn't sure we could grow it here, but it is in a dryish hot spot, and has even survived our low temp of 6 degrees last winter with no cover. We think it is a great little plant. I have just submitted this photo to the plant data base.
