Legalily- I can totally relate. I think I'm going to try daylilies again... I've had a couple in the past that looked nothing like the tag picture.

Avedon- that's so cool that you've been here. I've always wanted to check out Texas!

I agree with you about the daylily people. Not only are the blooms awesome, a lot of the photography is top notch, also.

When I found some of the seller's sites, and then I found this site, it was like there was this secret underground daylily cult that were discretely working together on advancing daylilies for their own kind. And now it seems like big box stores and even most garden centers are like a couple decades behind.

Be careful, though. The Daylily People are very good at adding people to their cult. "Just one 'Carolina Cool Down'. It won't hurt you!" Next thing you know, you're digging seedling beds in your back yard and by 10am you have yellow spots all over your favorite shirt from leaning over one plant to pollinate another.

If you are going to buy daylilies on-line, I encourage you to continue to look at the pictures here and also in this site's plant database. That way you can see how they look in average gardens, or gardens from people in your area. Sometimes the sellers' pictures are of the absolute perfect bloom on the absolute perfect day in the perfect climate, and a typical bloom looks a lot more "normal".

I agree Tim on coming here to verify how they look in real life. The one thing I have found out through trial and ERROR, is that if that the posted picture of a daylily looks REALLY good, check here before ordering because a lot of the sites have enhanced pictures. I learned the hard way and what bloomed was nothing like the picture. Now that I see the pictures others have posted, I know ahead of time what it really looks like and have learned to spot the enhanced pictures much quicker. Also, sometimes it takes a couple years to settle in to what the ultimate flower will look like.

This is a great point. For me, especially dark ones or the ones with intricate eyes can take a while to settle in and show you their true colors. I almost always give a plant three years before I give up on it.

Been to Victoria, went to a fabulous First Peoples museum. Stayed in a nice B&B on the west side of the water. Loved it all.

If you see a bloom that you like and the photo looks like this (and that includes the inside black rectangle);

Thumb of 2018-09-01/Charlemagne/457311

That means it has been entered into the data base and if you click on the link, in this case "(Hemerocalis 'Jean Swann') you will go directly to a link to its entry which will look something like this;

Data specific to Daylilies (Edit)
AHS link: AHS Daylily Cultivar Info
Hybridizer: Joiner
Year of Registration or Introduction: 1993
Ploidy: Diploid
Foliage type: Semi-evergreen

Followed by, in this case, 20 photos of Jean Swann taken by members of the forum usually in their own gardens.

Don't try this on the link in the photo above because it is only a picture of a link and it won't work.

If you go back to the daylily home page, click on July 2018 blooms or August 2018 blooms. Hundreds of photos posted by members. If the bloom you like doesn't have a link, just go to the top of the page and click on "Plants Database" and choose "Search by name," type in the name and it should give you a link to the page for your daylily.

And remember, have fun.

Charley
