Now that I'm in the midst of collecting pods I've noticed that certain dips seem to always have pods with sprouted seeds in them.

This year it is Sing Again. Pretty much every pod harvested has had at least 2 seeds sprouted. Has anyone else noticed this in a particular cultivar? Has anyone seen this tendency in tets?

Also, does this mean that the seeds produced by Sing Again don't need stratification? If I planted the rest of the seeds now they would all germinate right away?

Elena are you harvesting your seeds long after the pods are open ? I have seen it on a few occasions. Mainly on the late harvested ones. It probably wouldn't hurt to plant some now and some at a later date depending on your love of the parents.
As far as the rest germinating right away, there are no guarantees. Good possibility.

Mike, I'm harvesting most of the pods as soon as they show signs of opening. Most of my pods open well before they turn brown & shrivel (I think lack of high temps may play into that).

The one I harvested this morning cracked open when I gently squeezed it. But the pod was very wet inside (drops of water). Most other pods were dry inside. I'm assuming that has something to do with it.

After harvesting 3 pods I now have 8 seedlings so I'm not going to plant the rest this year. I typically only plant 20-30 seedlings a year. Just wondering if these guys popped without stratification then maybe all the others would too?

Elena, I popped open a tet pod recently that had one seed sprouting. I know Coral Majority was one parent in the cross, but can't recall which. I'll check the pot tag. I went ahead and planted all 7 or 8 seeds.

Hmm, I have Coral Majority but I'm not sure if I had any crosses take with it this year. If I did it will be awhile before I harvest any pods. So far none of my tet pods have had any sprouters.

Let me know if the other seeds from the cross sprout for you soon. I'm curious. Smiling

I harvested the last pod from Sing Again today and there were 3 seeds out of 7 already sprouted.

I think from now on I will just use SA as a pollen parent. I'm hoping that will stop the over eager seeds problem.

Elena, CM was the pollen parent in the cross and a seedling was the pod parent- I planted the seeds in a small pot and we've had entirely too much rain. Half of the seeds rotted, including the sprouted one... The others are now drying out in the house.

We went through that too much rain earlier in the summer. I think we've been dry for almost 2 weeks now. I actually watered today!

I had the sprouts inside until they start showing leaves. Then out they go. I might be overwatering then indoor though since most of the SA seedlings haven't popped up yet. I must admit I am somewhat neglecting them as I wouldn't mind if a few died off. I shouldn't feel that way though because this year I had 3 seedlings bloom from a cross that I wouldn't have planted. All three surprised me and one is my favorite to bloom this year.

I like the watermark edge : )
(Does that have an official trait name, or just "watermark edge"?)

I've never heard the term watermark edge. I really need to read up on the definitions of the various descriptions! I have no idea what to call it except a pink edge.

I'm hoping it stays looking like this. The first few blooms were plain red but throughout the season it slowly changed to what you see. The flower is smaller than either parent or its siblings but I think it's adorable!

I never have either- but that's what it looked like to me so that's what I called it. Might just be called a "red flower with a pink edge"

It is pretty : )

I think it is just referred to as an edged bloom.
