What's Blooming in April

By LarryR
April 19, 2012

Like many other parts of the Midwest, our spring came early in Iowa this year, with temperatures approaching those of summer. Unfortunately, we are back to reality now, with three successive nights of temperatures in the upper 20s. Some plants suffered visible damage, but many that I expected to see damaged breezed through the cold spell with nary a blemish! Come on into the garden and see what our early spring has wrought.

Your lilac is stunning and it's the one thing I miss most from when we lived in OH. I do have one started here and it's about a foot tall but no blooms Sad It's not Miss Kim either which is bred for the south. I have Kerria too! love it! Isn't it's common name - Yellow Rose of Texas?

I hope all your plants that got bit will do well Thumbs up

Woofie, BEAUTIFUL bloom and lovely story - thank you!

Thank you Larry, for a wonderful article and beautiful photos! Hurray! Thumbs up

Thanks for all those kind words, Vic. I'm glad to know another Kerria grower. It's as rare as hen's teeth up here in Iowa. Yes, one of it's common names is Yellow Rose of Texas. I didn't know that until I started researching Kerrias. In our neck of the woods the only Yellow Rose of Texas we know is this one (also called Harrison's Yellow Rose):

It's a common expression among us country folk here in Iowa--and evidently in country folk in Kentucky as well. Check this out: http://www.sciencedaily.com/re...

Oh my. I've never taken a shine to chickens because of their pecking ability which they seem to use most often when I am anywhere near them and now you indicate the possibility of pecking with teeth? Crocodile teeth. Oh my. This could increase the current feelings of hostility that are apparent between chickens and me upon close encounters.

I think since it's very near 1 a.m. here in Kentucky country, I might oughtta just hush for the night. Sticking tongue out
