I went looking for Pansies today. Home Depot had single plants in individual 2.5" pots for $3. I didn't like the price, so I went next door to Lowe's. They had the same pots, but I found 12-cel packs for $10! Much much better... I bought 5 packs.

BTW, 2 of the flowers on the plants in the cels in the purple color pack were literally black! I've never seen that before. Can you harvest pansy seeds for reseeding? I've had a few volunteers before, but that wasn't anything I did deliberately.

You can but you have to keep an eye on the pods before they open or they disperse.

OK, what are the "pods"? The part under the flower? Should I carefully snip the stems as the flowers are fading, just before, or just after?

You can't deadhead or you will be cutting off your future seeds. You have to wait for the seedpod to form and swell where the flowers were. The idea is to time it just before they split open and disperse. Often, you can still find seeds after they open. Here is a nice link with pictures so you know what it looks like. It's better than me describing it. You want to wait until the pod looks like it is drying out. Practice makes perfect!

Pansies do take a while to get to the sizes you see in the nurseries.
