Lots of Carolina Wrens here year round. They make several nest a year in the strangest places. My Dad has an empty wine box on his patio that they love to make a nest in. This year two families made a nest at once in it, five babies in all. He is 86 and has all the time to watch them, he said it is a community event feeding and caring for them. When the fledglings leave all the adults that had been caring for them, about four or five, gather around and cheer them on their first little flights.
I believe this is a young female Cardinal taking a bath in my birdbath the other day, she knew I was photographing her, so kept her eye on me but continued to enjoy the bath. The last photo is funny because there is a ceramic turtle on the birdbath and she was looking checking it out.
I'd love to see a wren fledgling party
And your cardinal is adorable!
We don't get too much in the way of pretty birds around here. Makes it all the more special to see all of yours
Just as I have been remiss in birding activities this month (other facets of life have gotten in the way), the last week appears to have been rather quiet of this thread. So, it is only with a small bit of guilt that I will post a bit lengthy post in re last Thursday's quick foray into the Lehigh Parkway. All was without feathered friends, until a few hundred yards up stream of the Robin Hood Bridge; there on the other side of the stream was our good friend, JR: After quickly taking the long range image, I shifted upstream a bit (trying for better lighting). JR milled around a bit:
and was totally unfazed by folks passing close by on the bridal path near him:
After about twenty minuets of this "exciting" interlude, he did some stretching: and checked out a hawk flying overhead:
He briefly shifted back to stoic posing mode: before giving me the "Are you ready?" signal: Followed by a quick crouch:
And liftoff!:
With a short flight to my side of the stream:
He paused for a quick closeup pose before launching again, this time to disappear behind some bushes on the opposite bank:
It was time to head back home, grab my afternoon snack and review the images.
