A dangerous drug can be made from a related plant (borrachero tree) so dangerous chilren are told not to sleep under it.
Does anyone know if any of this is true?

I think it is safe as long as you don't eat it. I have had them in my yard for years with no problems. I have also kept them in my greenhouse all winter.

Most of the Solanaceae family are toxic to some degree. The trick is to teach your children not to eat plants. Half of the plants we grow in our gardens are toxic to some degree...certainly any thing with white sap is at least an irritant, but if a child decides to taste it, they aren't likely to do it again. Do a little research and decide if you want to give up tomatoes and potatoes as well. That article does say up front "urban legend."

I agree with Michael and Carol. I've grown them with no problems. They are gorgeous and shouldn't be excluded. You just have to make sure that children or pets don't try to eat them.

Years ago I remember reading that they were banned in some states due to the hallucinogenic properties. I always wondered if that was true.
