Leslie, I was sorry to learn about this but am very happy that you quickly found another place that you are so happy with, and I sure hope everything works out for the new home. And I'm also hoping that most of your daylilies are already in pots so that you can just move them rather than having to dig!

Hi Betty. Thanks! As a matter of fact I'm just about to go out and start potting up the DL I lined out in Oct. Only 500 or so. LOL

Hey Leslie, if you have mine already lined out you could just ship them to me now; that would give you 498 or so instead of 500 to pot up Whistling

Leslie, I wish we lived closer to you because I would come help you dig and pot. I am sure that there are many others here who feel the same way.

Tink, I'll check tomorrow and will ship if they look ready. I've got to see if the aphids are gone.

I'm surprised we haven't seen an aphids whatsoever. I haven't sprayed anything until last week when I had to spray for spider mites; they were getting bad.

Ive been spraying for rust, and I thought that should take care of the aphids, but yesterday I found them all over my seedlings, and sprayed some more.
The squirrels have dug up a good/13 of my seedlings, doent matter how much pepper spray I use. Really irritating to say the least.

It would not look pretty but you could but a half dome of wire fencing over them.

Bump. Very interesting - but what is the difference between a fused bloom and a poly. What is a fused bloom for that matter?
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Basically a fused bloom is two buds that have fused together and the blooms will have more petals and sepals than normal. If there are two pistils and 12 stamens then it is a fused bloom, there may be less than 12 stamens sometimes though. The base of the bloom will look like different as well.

A poly has more petals and sepals on one bloom, will have one pistil, and it will have the same amount of stamens as the petals and sepals. Sometimes there are 8, 10, or even 12 petals and sepals. I have had some that just have 7 so it didn't fully poly. You can tell if a bloom will be a poly before it opens because the bud will have more segments.

Michelle, thank you. So good to see what the fused looks like. That is very kind of you.

Be aware that sometimes you can have a double daylily which will also exhibit some degree of polymerous behavior. 'Alternate Behavior' is a Stamile double daylily which will sometimes (at most 10% in my garden) produce polymerous segments, in addition to the double behavior.

The opposite is also true - a poly bloom can produce petaloids created from the stamens. Last summer I had maiden bloom on a seedling of uncertain ancestry (though I believe that 'Hip to be Square' figured somewhere in the background). Four of the five blooms showed extra tepals in one configuration or another, and at least one of the blooms also had petaloids (doubling). (I will spare you the horror of pictures. Thus far this season it has bloomed all of one poly bloom Grumbling ; I am waiting to see what transpires with the rebloom scape.)
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Gleni, have you had any chemicals sprayed near your Olympic Showcase? Even chems the neighbor may have sprayed that could have drifted? Sometimes things like Round-up can cause mutations on plants. That would be my first guess. But then I don't know the ancestors of OS lol so maybe it does have some doubling aunties that are showing up now... Some dl just double when they feel like it once in a while, for fun I guess!
