I like growing epiphytes because they are cool. I like my Myrmecophelia tibicinis a lot because it is also an ant plant....the name 'Myrmecophelia' refers to ants. Most orchids are of course epiphytes although some are lithophytes or terrestrials.

I have another cool plant that has this same feature (it will house ants), the epiphytic Hydnophytum formicarium. This is called the 'small form'. These are native to Singapore, where they are critically endangered, but fortunately the have been cultivated elsewhere so they are not in entire danger of going extinct. And they have cool little teensy flowers right now!

I love the Hydnophytum formicarium. I had that one, I kept it alive for a few years, but then eventually lost the plant. I remember picking it up at the Chicago Orchid fest around 2004, some greenhouses sold all sorts of cool stuff besides Orchids.

I am going to be looking in Spring to replace the Dischidia major I lost (aka raffelsiana, pectinoides). I have been snooping around online and every place that sells it is sold out! I am hoping to score one at the Spring plant and orchid show here in March

I do not grow any other epiphytes other then orchids. There is only so much space and I just have so much time to devote to my hobbies.

The closest I get to growing other epiphytes are Clivia, which are semi-epiphytic like some of the Cymbidium genus.

I posted this on another forum, but I have found that the only way I can personally grow Scindapsus is as an epiphyte. If I try to grow it in soil it dies. But it flourishes if grown in moss. I also had some epiphytic jungle cacti that escaped their pots and rooted in detritus on the cross slats of the greenhouse....and they are a lot happier than some I have in soil. One pic ran is way up by the roof happily growing with just me pointing the hose up there and giving it a rain shower. I learned also that some of my anthuriums are happier as epiphytes. I am growing several Anthuriun pseudospectabile in moss baskets. I like to combine plants in baskets, I might have an anthurium is moss with an orchid in the same basket. I do the same thing with bromeliads, I grow some of the mini-neoregelias in the same baskets with other epiphytes

Wow, thanks Joshua, I didn't know clivias are semi-epiphytes. I have a nice big plant of the pale yellow one, and I've been probably coddling it way too much. It only blooms about every 3rd year.

I also have a few Tillandsias and a lot of bromeliads in my garden. Who doesn't like a completely easy care plant that blooms randomly several times per year.

I had never heard that about Clivia either! Seems we do learn something new every day.

My mum grows an orange Clivia miniata and gave me a division. I also bought a cream seedling (years away from flowering). When potting them up, I noticed the roots looked very similar to that of Cymbidiums, so I looked it up and found that they're actually semi-epiphytic. I'm trying out the same orchid media I use for my Cyms (a generic media designed for both terrestrial and epiphytes - I wouldn't try Orchiata bark, for example). So far, so good.

I had a clivic years ago that I got in a trade. I grew it for a while and them it just sort of petered out. I can;t remember if I was trying to grow it as an epiphyte or how. I have a weakness for the vining climbing things....vanilla orchids, climbing Anthuriua, Epipremnums and Rhaphidophoras and Monsteras....and dischidias. I have been looking for a new Monstera dubia for a while but cannot find a source
