In October I purchased a Amaryllis 'Chico' bulb from a well known bulb company. It's in bloom now but is definitely not Chico. After scouring the web to look for similar blooms, it looks like it could be Sumatra but I'm unsure. It has the features of a Cybister with thinner leaves and petals and stands 24" tall. The bulb has produced 3 stems that have a dark red tinge at the base. The blooms are 5" across. Any advice would be appreciated. The company that I bought it from is not replying to my inquiries.

@sejod - I had that same problem when I ordered from dutchgardens. I ordered Sweet Potato Pie and they substituted Sumatra without telling me - and only after I fooled and fooled around with customer service because the Sweet Potato Pie never arrived. The Sumatra bulb was huge and very healthy, but I will not buy from them again because of all the problems I had with customer service, and because they just went ahead and substituted without telling or asking me. Crying D'Oh! Thumbs down

Yes, of all of the images I looked through I thought it looked closest to Sumatra so I appreciate all of your input. I've ordered from easytogrowbulbs two years in a row now and this is the second problem with wrong id's. So this will probably be the last time I deal with them. I'm so frustrated. I was considering picking up a Chico from another company and then crossing my fingers that I actually get the real thing Smiling

I have never had a problem with easytogrowbulbs.
But, I have heard this: When a bulb ships, it usually passes through 6 different sets of hands. If any one of those people makes a mistake, you will get the wrong bulb. This is especially easy to do with bulbs since they all look alike and the next set of hands will not be able to tell it is wrong.

@cwhitt - That's true. Last year I ordered Ferrari Red from easytogrowbulbs . When it bloomed and I realized it was the wrong bulb I sent them a picture. They id'd it as Pink Surprise and sent me another Ferrari Red (the real one) - I got lucky. However this year easytogrowbulbs doesn't carry Sumatra and I believe Chico is the only cybister type amaryllis that they had. And at this point it's out of stock. So I wonder if everyone else who got this bulb is asking them the same thing - what is this? So far they have not replied to my inquiries.

I think everyone on this forum has had problems with mis-ID'd bulbs, it's hugely frustrating.
Chico is a real beauty though so hope you manage to find one.

Well bother. Perhaps their supplier sent them the wrong bulbs. It is frustrating when you have your heart set on a particular bulb, order it, wait and wait for it to arrive, grow it, only to discover it is not what you ordered. It is all the worse when customer service does fix the problem. Perhaps they will still get back to you - maybe they are trying to still figure out the problem. Crossing Fingers!

I figured the same thing @cwhitt. Hoping that they get it straightened out AND send me another bulb or credit for the one I received. That would be nice and the right thing to do.
Yes, @kniphofia, I am in love with this one. Have you seen this video: Chico Time Lapse Blooming http://vimeo.com/9619844
