I had a question from someone who wanted to post more plant pictures but was limited as a new member to a certain number... how long before they are no longer "new members" and can post lots of images?

Post images where? In threads? Database? I am not aware of any limitations adding photos.

I haven't heard of a limitation in terms of the number of images (that's not to say there isn't one, though), but new members can't post hyperlinks for a while. Are they trying to embed 3rd-party hosted photos like many other forums offer? That feature isn't available here.

I was told the new member was limited in how many images could be posted to threads on the succulent forum. It's been a while since I was new here so I can't remember what the rules are. Let me get back in touch with the new member and see what the deal is, then.

It's just a limit on hyperlinks so they may be confused.

There might be a limit to the number of posts, or new threads, for new members regardless of whether they are trying to post images or not.
I seem to remember something about that a while back when the spam was 'sploding'

Just out of curiosity, when might the limit on new posts or threads expire?

I believe that there is a limit to how many threads a new member can make to prevent spammers that we have had to deal with in the past. However I do not know the what that number is, or how long it lasts.

I think that is probably a good idea. Seems like spammers can use apps or programs and send out hundreds of spam posts within a minute or two.

A new member who is a spammer could simply fill up multiple forums very quickly. So limiting a new member to a few posts is reasonable until they become established members. That shouldn't take too long a time and new members coming on board should be advised on joining that a new member has limits which will disappear at some point.

But - and I believe this is important - removing the restriction should be keyed to actual posts they make, I think, and not informed of the number or the time that triggers the removal of the restriction. Otherwise a spammer could just sign up and wait out the period and then flood the site with spam. If members actually post, then their use of the site as a valid member interested in on-topic subjects should become clear relatively soon. If they don't ever post, it might remain unknown. Unfortunately it means a long-time lurker that decides suddenly to start participating might have restrictions.

Just my thoughts. Sometimes an inconvenience works out better in the long haul.

here is what was said in September
dave said:I just uploaded my code that restricts new members. People who have an account less than a week old may now only start one new thread during each 24 hour period. Once the week is past, the restriction is lifted on their account.

Spam will be harder to notice now since they can only post one spam per account. Please by vigilant to click the report icon for any spams you see.

It's possible that they will move on to post their spams as replies to existing threads. If they do that, I will extend the restriction to include replies.

It's also possible that they will figure out to signup and then wait a while before the restriction is lifted. If they do that, then I will further update the code to include a daily limit until a certain number of successful un-flagged posts are made under their account.

Looks like at that time, the time limit was a week and the restriction was only on starting new threads.
Doesn't seem like that should prevent new members from posting photos in existing threads...
Don't know if the restriction code has been extended, however, to limit replies and/or to daily limits after the initial week Shrug! if so that may be a factor...
