My favorite of the hibiscus family so far, hands down. Not because it's gorgeous--although it is very pretty--but because of its special use after the flowers. In fall it's like dessert after the harvest here in Maryland--the very last things we picked when I grew it successfully year before last. Me and the little ones loved finding the plump calyxes, which stained our fingers and everything else red. We used some of them, but mostly it was an experiment. I tried again this past year but didn't get a sprout. I will be trying again this coming season.

They don't really take off until midsummer when it's very hot, and like all hibiscus love their water. We got A LOT (maybe a pound) of calyxes from three plants.
