I grow vegetables in large containers all the time.
Yes, they need more watering than in the ground, and sometimes the yield is not as great as it would be in the ground.
There are "patio" and dwarf varieties of most vegetables.
Go ahead and try a few, and see how they grow in your zone in containers.
