Like a number of other South American species, this one is slow to develop in the spring. Ours don't hit stride until June, and then they grow rapidly. Much like tomatoes for us - put out early they just sulk. Planted when the soil is warm and the days longish they rocket up. Getting maximum light without bruning the leaves with hot sun takes a bit of thought. But worth it.
