There's no protocol, although I can share the reasoning:
Often the original poster doesn't go back and view their original post (dare I say never?)
If you don't receive a system message alerting you to the fact that people agreed with you, you would never know.
I generally just click on the blue icon on the left, that opens the window to all of my system messages, then I close that window. Takes a second or two.
