Well, for one thing you're both north of their hardiness zone (which is 5 at best). I'd get them in the ground as early as possible as you may get some blooms but I'd have serious reservations about them returning. Until then, keep them cool and dry; or try large pots, you've nothing to lose anyway. I'd probably go w/ the largest pot I could handle.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.
