I'm planning to do something similar with PVC to hold a birdhouse I covered with pebbles. My son hooked up a utility sink in my daughter's basement while I was there and he had a couple of pieces of PVC he was going to throw away!!! I grabbed them quick and hauled them all the way back to Virginia.
