I had a bad case of something like that this spring because I had a kitten and didn't want to spray or put something down -- but I believe mine was caused by snails and slugs. I've been killing a ton of them, and in some cases they totally shredded the leaves way down to close to the base. Thank heavens little kitty is now older, so I'm starting to apply Deadline -- and you should see the corpses!
