I've been to Ajijic on Lake Chapala several times, it is a beautiful area with great weather. It's a little chilly for me in the winter but it is only a couple hours from Pto Vallarta and warm beaches. Plus, chilly for me is shorts weather for those from northern climates. Guadalajara is one of my favorite cities, it was a close second when we were choosing where to live. Ajijic is very old and charming and mainly Canadians and Americans living the good life. It's more expensive I would guess than the beach town of Chelem but it doesn't have the heat, humidity or chance of a hurricane.
A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.
