In zone 8, in the southeast US, they are hardy in the ground. We get very little snow in winter; the worst problem we have to deal with is a late frost in spring that may burn the leaf tips. You may want to try one bulb and see how well it survives your winters. You may also consider planting in a sheltered location with mulch for additional protection. nodding
