Is it possible to leave winter squash on to long during growing season?

I have grown them for decades but this is the first year the vines have leaves that stand straight up, some over three feet and make the area where the plants, four, were first planted a dark jungle.
I do not walk through it as it is thick and I do not want to wreck very healthy plants.
During high sun I can see there are some squash in there that have probably been the for quite some time.

Normally you can see the fruit while standing back ten fifteen feet but not this year.
