I have a Persian Kaffir Lime Plant, (citrus Hystrix) under lights in my basement right now. I have had it for five years and it bears a few fruit each year now. I love it! The same word, "Kaffir" was at one time, used commonly in South Africa amongst those of Dutch/German heritage primarily, referring in a derogative manner toward "blacks" exclusively. I don't know if it still used in South Africa, the Netherlands or Germany? Not besmirching those of German/Dutch/Swiss ancestry, (I am one), but just stating my understanding of the word. Should we change the plant variety name, which is understood by most Asian countries by that name, and used as a prime cooking ingredient because some ignorant people may still be using it in a derogatory fashion somewhere on the face of the Planet? Not favouring that approach as there are a lot of "dual" usage words in use, believe me. Cheers!
