Now for Kinnikinnick:
Our Seniors development of Grandview Heights, had a beautiful understory of the native Kinnikinnick or Bearberry, especially under the Ponderosa Pines. This all had to be bulldozed away to install underground wiring and services for our 47 Bungalow and Duplex units. When building my garden from scratch, I remembered those wonderful native plants, and found a supply of young plants bred in Vancouver, B.C. that were perfect for the xeriscape edges of the bank at the back of our place, and also in the dry spot under our eaves, next to the house.
To show the difference between the wild Bearberry and the variety developed at the University of British Columbia (U.B.C.) called Vancouver Jade, I'll show the images side by side, so that you can flip back and forth to see the differences.
On the left, the wild variety has smaller leaves. On the right, you'll see longer leaves and longer reddish stems.
