For those interested in a more technical explanation...
Generally if the character is part of the basic ASCII character set (
http://asciiset.com/ - the first table contains the base character set and the right three columns are the printable/visible characters), it should be okay. If it's not, though, things can get messed up due to the many different character sets in use across the world.
