Butterscotch Ruffles is almost always the first daylily to bloom each year. This year it started blooming on June 2. Most of my other early blooming daylilies won't bloom for another week or two. For that reason alone I'll always keep it!

BR is a tough daylily. It has survived total neglect and still blooms and increases. It is one of my longer blooming daylilies but it doesn't rebloom for me.

It is both pod and pollen fertile. I haven't tried to grow out many crosses but the ones I have grown have not survived the first winter/spring. In bad years BR can suffer from the repeated freeze/thaw cycles but it always bloomed (though not as well). I need to try and grow out a cross of BR with another daylily that is very hardy in my climate to see if I can get any 2 year old seedlings. If that cross fails to produce hardy seedlings I will most likely stop using BR in my breeding program.

Edited to add that I have had BR rebloom in my garden. I may have missed it in the past because it tends to rebloom in September/October.
