Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I ended up cutting it in December, so it's entirely possible the cuttings won't take. Either way, the branch is now out of the way of the door, which was the main point. I'm also starting to learn how to prune citrus and mango (which I have elsewhere in the garden) and that's inspiring me to take more of an interest in my plumies. I'll be scouring the forum here for advice on maintenance pruning.
