Those seeds may be from last year. The trees bloom in the spring, set seeds in the summer that mature in the fall and fall in the spring. Try planting them now. I plant them by poking the seed head into the soil with the 'wing' sticking up. That way, I know where I put a seed.

If the seeds are not mature, putting them away until next spring will not make them more mature, just older.
