Yes the reds often become purples the second year. There are two predominant anthocyanins, the red cyanidin and the blue delphnidin. Cyanidin is the simpler molecule and it seems to occur first ontogenetically. So I won't know whether they'll be red or purple until next spring. However, a lot of these are crosses made for dark purple and in some of those rows all the seedlings are colored.
There are some crosses that are for reds and these rows seem a bit brighter. I'll know more in spring.
