We have always used Spectracide granular on our lawn to get rid of grubs, chiggers and any pest insects. We have always just walked our small rat terriers and mini dachshunds at other outdoor parks/areas (doggie bag in hand) for the 1-2 days the product label says to wait after watering it in before it is safe to let dogs back on the lawn again. Yeah, that's a hassle, but if ya want to get rid of grubs, that's the only thing I know of that gets 'em underground. When it rains the chemicals go down into the soil where they reside. And rat terriers are noted for being sensitive to insecticides, but my girl is now nearly 16 and doing quite nicely despite our lawn treatments with Spectracide granules.
That said, that was before we discovered that swimming pool filter diatomaceous earth powder will do the job for most all exoskeleton insects that are on the SURFACE of your lawn. Don't think it will get grubs that live UNDER the ground.
