Years ago I grew a bunch of African Violets and I found it very easy to set them up with wick-watering.
As wick I preferred the flat cotton, ca 1cm wide shoelaces. ( after testing all sorts of different materials/ropes) I repotted my plants and inserted the wick into the pot in such a way that one end would sit all the way up to the surface of the soil and the other end hang out on the bottom. I placed a rack over a deep tray ( think a lasagna pan in shape) and filled it with sufficient water. Set the plants on that rack and drop the end of the wick into the water. You may have to wet the wick at that point to get the wick-action started.
Easy? Smiling
