I don't even try to add mulch to them now. I just let them be. The spring bulbs know when it is time to grow. Most of the daffs in my garden look like that picture, with a few inches of growth showing. But I do have some that are way ahead and already blooming or just about to bloom. Everything seems to always work out fine.
