This ^ is the Brother label maker that I use. It connects to a PC or MAC. I like using my computer keyboard vs. the small keyboard on the portable versions. You can store unlimited labels on the computer.
I use 1", 1/2" and 1/4" tapes. The cartridges are a little expensive but this year I finally realized that I can choose "print continuously" which saves a LOT on tape. Otherwise you waste about 1/2" of tape between every label you make.
My garden labels must be going on at least 4 - 5 years and have not faded or shown damage of any kind. I love this label maker.
