Mona, the secret to my roots being that way is alfalfa mixed in the soil (with the other stuff I use). I have seen plants with it and without and I seriously think it helps. Plus I sit the pots in the beds that aren't planted but have the pine bark mixture in it. The roots grow down to the moisture . Sometimes in pots the water just doesn't always saturate all the potting mix and I think the roots just stay where it's moist. If I have pots that aren't in the beds I'll fill another pot part way with the pine bark and sit the other pot inside, it works the same way. I was pleased when I started unpotting them. I was afraid the fans may be on the small side, but once they got washed they look bigger than when in the pots.
