... presents a blank wall to my garden. The elderly lady in that unit was too ill to garden, but she occasionally mentioned how nice it would be to have some plants against that wall. So we built the small bed you see [4 feet x 12 feet] and, at her request, planted some things you would not normally see in an Oklahoma City garden. I was pleasantly surprised when she said pretty foliage was more important to her than flowers.
She liked the Hosta, the Buckeye, the Heuchera and the Elderberry... but the Rice Paper Plant really caught her fancy. I overheard her telling a friend one day, "...and the Chinese used to make paper from parts of that plant. Isn't that amazing!"
Well, yes Nancy, it is.
Nancy passed away last year... and every time I see that plant I think very fondly of her. She was a gentle and kind lady.
Gardens are memories.
