Yes, a lot of light is really important, if you want to avoid floppy leaves and stems.
I have had a few striatas over the years (one grown to landscape size by someone else, 3 that I got as tiny seedlings and grew to size myself). They will do well but be limited in a 3 gallon (10 inch) pot, probably only get anywhere near their true potential in a 12 inch pot, so you have some perspective about size.
The flowers are mite magnets, and repeated mite infestation was the reason I deleted the striata from the public garden, though the flowers are pretty excellent.
