Don't give up,my gardens are over ten years old,they really didn't look good until year five also.
One of my many mistakes was planning [or lack of it]. I went for flowers i liked rather than anchoring areas with larger shrubs first than filling in. Spacing evergreens with deciduous wasn't considered. Then taking down a few big sick trees threw off the scale. Funny i never think in terms of now regarding the garden it's always about next season. Despite mistakes i'm getting there.
