For a public reply you can start your message with
@whomever, that will alert them there is a message to them. For a private reply you click on their name in their message and a profile will come up and you click on "send ..... a tree-mail" it is right at the top of the page. The little envelope on the top right of your page will indicate if you get a private message. Hope this makes sense.
