This garden was back in 2015. We liked the idea of varying heights- but most importantly a great variety of plants heavy laden with pollen and/or nectar for the pollinators!
They prefer a selection of tastes to sample just as we humans do. Also- some bees and especially Bumblebees, have short or long tongues, so a nice mixture of flowers helps to accomodate any pollinator that decides to stop here a while.
Previously this small plot was part of a tired, haggard mess of old privet hedges planted years before. My finacee, now hubbie, had built the wooden arbor you can kinda see in the top, left background. It supports a healthy Pipevine for the Pipevine Swallowtails. The white plastic pipe attached to the fence is a native bee house with removeable cardboard tubes for nesting bought inexpensively from Crown Bees online.
"My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal seekers of sweetness. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished." — Mary Oliver, from Messenger
