Traditionally, Kokedama was a ball of mud wrapped in living moss. It wasn't meant to be permanent, more of a decoration to put with the bonsai when they were on display.
The new versions seem to be balls of sphagnum moss with decorative green moss wrapped around the outside to simulate the living moss. The originals weren't meant to be watered because by the time the mud dried, the display was over. The new Kokedama are placed in a saucer of water to soak up water and then allowed to dry again. I can see where a Phalaenopsis would be pretty happy in this set up. The succulents would do well too.
I have rhipsalis growing in my orchid pots in my greenhouse - watered daily and high humidity. I'll post photos when I can get to my computer.
