The bloom in your photo look a lot like the white-yellowish bloom on a Magnolia figo, or what I have always called a Banana Magnolia Shrub.
. Leaves look similar as well. Does this plant you refer to smell like banana?
Their fragrance can be overpowering on a mature bush. There was one of these in our back yard in Montgomery, Alabama when I was about 10 years old. I did try to grow one here in Central TX when we first bought this house 6 years ago. It was a rich, cark green when I bought it, but it didn't like our very alkaline soil I suspect. Despite adding acid-boosting fertilizer, it got steadily yellower leaves over the first year, dropping them eventually, as well as tshe blooms. It only produced maybe half a dozen blooms 1st and second season that smelled divinely of banana oil.
