If Ancaster is located in suburban Hamilton area of Ontario, it may be mild enough for Norway Maple to already be blooming - but that is pretty far north in North America, and I think they've possibly had some recent snow storms come through the Great Lakes area.

Palm0 could inform us of weather conditions, other things that are blooming (for the phenologists among us) and when this photo was taken. That might make a difference, too.

Though no one has yet asked, I will "show my work" (like we had to do when I learned math sans electronic calculator). My estimation of the ID is based on what appears to be opposite branching of twigs up in the top of the crown silhouette - which is a good way to eliminate some species. Maples as genus have opposite arrangement of buds, leaves, and thus branches. The trunk/bark also appears to be a match for Norway Maple. The general form and habit fits Norway Maple.

Alternatively, a first impression was that this tree looked like a Red Oak. If I have misread the twig arrangement - and further closeup images can provide that information - then that would be the way I would lean, depending on those additional pictures.

Class dismissed...
John
