Hello… I hope we can get the leaves opened on your bird.

Bird of Paradise are really tough plants. I have had one for over 20 years as a indoor plant.

Your bird looks like wind damage , looking at the torn leaves in the pic which can be a normal effect from weather. They need to be in a protected area from harsh drying winds, especially if not hardened off before placing outside full time.
Summer is the growth period for birds , many new leaves appear and they are very thirsty plants and don't like the soil to dry out.

The seasons are now changing with shorter days and longer nights. This Signals the plants to shut down by not producing new growth. Temps, 12-14 hours of daylight are narrowing down and the horticultural requirements of the plant changes. Light and temp changes are the effects causing droopy stems .

How to open leaves. The leaves have a skin on the seems holding them closed sometimes preventing the leafs from opening. It helps to open the seems by carefully coaxing the leaf open all the way down the entire seem by breeching the skin.
This technique slightly opens the leafs. Releasing the skin will allow the leaf to completely unfurl and open fully in a couple of days.

The leaves do age out crack and sometime the stems are bent down…. causing leaf loss and ….Normal response for indoor birds or reaction to seasonal changes.

I put my bird outside every summer …during the growth period many new leaves grow out in warm temps, better light and higher humidity. During winters while in the house heat dries out the leaves a spritz of water will help replace humidity to keep the leaves supple and from browning.

As leaves droop and die back clip them off 5-6" from top soil levels. It's best to clip off browned leafs quickly. The dead plant material releases a gas that will encourage other plant leaves to die back. No fertilizer in winters , keep soil damp not wet, they will be happier in winter by letting the soil dry out completely between watering. During cloudy winter days they do well in bright indirect light in windows .

No worries birds adapt well to different temps and light. Keep in temps above 55-60'.

Pic of my Bird… which has never flowered due to the climate in zone 8b.
