Today, when I watered a potted geranium overwintering in my basement, I started to hear this cyclical buzzing noise. I wasn't sure if there was something wrong with my pipes but when I lifted a particular pot, it stopped. I repotted the plant with new soil and moved the old potting soil outdoors. I poured it into another pot, looking for some large larvae but I didn't see anything. Later, I started poking around that soil while I was outside watching my dog. It made another loud buzzing noise and some chirpy sounds. Again, I sorted through the soil and saw nothing. Any ideas what makes such a noise under the soil during winter? I thought maybe a cicada nymph but didn't see one.
In the meantime, I brought the soil back in and want to put it in a butterfly cube to see what comes out if I didn't kill it while poking around. It didn't sound happy when I stirred around the second time. I imagine if I didn't harm it, I will hear it again. Who knows, maybe get a recording.
