I have the Grampa's Weeder, your 2nd link, and it actually works quite well and is built very well, it's very sturdy. My neighbor also has one and likes it. It can sometimes leave a piece of root that might break off on those real long roots, but that happens when you're down on your hands and knees and doing it by hand too, so it's really not an issue for me and my bad knees.
