I've never heard of this, but it seems to be working. It could also be that it was going to branch anyway.
As for the mix under the sink, I would either refrigerate it or toss it. By now I would expect that it will reek something fierce considering the ingredients and temperature. You've got a very liquid anaerobic compost pile hiding under your kitchen sink.
