Brian, it is difficult to tell how large the fans are. How long did it take the shipment to travel from Indiana to Canada? Do you think customs could have held up the shipment? I personally don't think they look too bad, but, of course, this was after they soaked for several days. If they came from Indiana, then the evergreen/semi-evergreen daylilies went through a winter that killed the foliage back then the foliage would grow again, only to get killed back over and over. By the spring the fans have used much of their stored energy trying to grow all winter that they start the spring much smaller than they were in the fall. It takes some time for them to beef up. The roots look good. I once had a shipment from a major hybridizer get lost for about a week and by the time the plants arrived they looked rather pitiful, all yellow. Within a week to ten days, you couldn't tell. All plants shipped to you bare root will lose some of the bottom leaves. I hope they grow and bloom well for you. There are some northern growers who dig and ship as soon as the daylilies start growing, while the fans are still puny looking. The big thing is to have a good root system. I personally would prefer that they be sent early and I can let them beef up in my own garden. I have received some of those GIANT fans from FL that split into many small fans and they didn't grow or bloom well. I personally prefer the average size fans and then I can fertilize, etc. in my own garden.
Susan, I am so sorry you had such a problem with your seller. I think sellers should treat buyers the way they would want to be treated - in communication, feedback, shipping notification, etc.
