I grow the plec barbatus and the variegated form also...they get very large here. I did have a large stand that I've now pulled out since I'm currently cutting back on beds to be watered and cared for. Interesting, I didn't think of growing them from seed, but once you've got them going, they root super easy in water.
I could be wrong...
