In the lower right hand corner of your post you will see a star, an acorn, and a thumb.
I gave you a thumb. In addition to receiving notification, you can also click on the (1) or whatever the number is, and it will tell you who gave you those thumbs.
For example, if someone received 16 thumbs, they can click on the (16) and it will tell them who gave them those thumbs but then Dave also has it now that you are notified.
Before you initially give someone a thumb, the thumb is green. Once you give them a thumb, it turns black.
