That particular garden is about 5 hours drive away from here. Its attached to one of our historic houses, this one is Snowshill Manor. We visited several on the way back from our summer holiday in Cornwall last year. I did ask the groundsman but he didn't know what it was called. He said it had been there as long as he could remember and thought it must be a very old variety.
Thank-you for the suggestion Evey, now I have an idea what to look for I will see if I can find one over here. I would think the RHS ( Royal Horticultural Society) will be able to tell me. My other half is a member and we will be visiting their gardens at Harlow Carr, in Yorkshire, next month and are also going to the Chelsea Flower Show in May.
